Mountain ranges of the Hex River Valley

As we are all experiencing life under lockdown right now, we thought it is a perfect time to continue with our know your valley campaign. This week we are focusing on the mountains that frame our valley.
The valley is surrounded by the towering peaks of the Hex River Mountains to the North and the Kwadouw /Quadu Mountain Range to the south which account for the regionโs magnificent and rugged scenery.
The valley is situated in a geological transition zone. The geology of the south west of the valley is part of the Western Capeโs Fold Mountain complex consisting of Table Mountain sandstone (snowy mountains in the picture). To the north east of the valley this gives way to Bokkeveld Shale and the butte formations typical of the Karoo (the flat topped mountain in the picture with the dam). if you know the valley well, you can see the transition zone between the two types of geological formation near the Hex River Pass.
