Nederburg in Paarl is set for a sensational summer, with a range of flavour-intensive offerings devised to delight!

With new head chef Lisa Cilliers at the helm, The Red Table restaurant, situated in Nederburg’s historic manor house, has launched a fresh and exciting summer menu.

A Paarl local, Cilliers has previously worked at The Red Table as chef de partie. She held this position for three years before taking on an opportunity to work as sous chef at The Polo Club Restaurant at Val de Vie Estate.

She had been exposed to a broad spectrum of food styles during her studies at Boland College, and her career to date. “While I was studying, I spent weekends learning about Cape Malay cuisine under the leadership of Cass Abrahams, widely known as the foremost authority on this style of food preparation. I’ve always been passionate about South African cuisine, with some international influence,” she explains.

Cilliers’ fresh new additions to The Red Table’s à la carte menu include starters such as green bean, avocado and bocconcini baby leaf salad topped with poached egg, toasted almonds and light lemon dressing; smoked smoor snoek and cauliflower rice, lightly curried with sambals, green chutney and sweet potato crisps; and slaphakskeentjie tart tatin with chevin cream. Starters range in price from R65 to R95, with some offered as main course options.

The main course menu features new dishes such as pork belly with braised red cabbage and green apple with sweet potato croquettes; fresh fish of the day and chips with tartar sauce; biltong-crusted beef fillet with potatoes Boulangère, flashed garden vegetables and chimichurri sauce; and slow-braised springbok phyllo parcel with maize tabbouleh, toasted corn and red wine jus. Main course options cost between R120 and R215 per dish.

Delectable desserts are also available, including baked cheesecake with gooseberry compote; rich chocolate fondant with vanilla ice cream; Gewürztraminer-infused crème brȗlée; and milk tart with rooibos ice cream; and artisanal flavoured lollies. Pricing ranges between R25 and R85.

The new summer menu caters for children as well, with a selection of meals offered at between R55 and R60 per meal.

If a relaxing summer picnic enjoyed under the shady oak trees in the sprawling garden, with views of the majestic Drakenstein Mountains, is more to your liking - that could be arranged!  Feast on a freshly prepared selection of artisanal bread and hummus, delicious cheeses, fig preserve, thyme & lemon chicken kebabs, Springbok samoosas, roasted Cajun spiced nuts, brie and mushroom tartlet with caramelised onions, fresh seasonal salad, and a sweet treat; all offered at R225 per person sharing. It comes packed in a picnic basket complete with cutlery, crockery, glassware, wooden platter, blanket and ice bucket.  Kids’ picnics are also on offer, at only R95 per head.  It includes a mini beef burger, chips, sweets, fruit juice and bubbles.  Picnic orders need to be confirmed 48 hours in advance by contacting The Red Table restaurant.

Nederburg’s award-winning range of wines, as well as mineral water and soft drinks, are available for purchase to complement your meal or picnic.  Please enquire with The Red Table regarding pricing.

A short walk away from the historic manor house is the comfortable Visitors’ Centre. Here you can taste and purchase Nederburg’s delicious selection of wines, including some exclusively available from the farm in Paarl, such as the elegant The Winemasters Albarino 2018 that achieved a double gold medal at the 2018 Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards.

Some of Nederburg’s luxurious Private Bin wines, made for exclusive sale at the annual Nederburg Auction, are now offered for sale at the Visitors’ Centre (while stock lasts).  The selection features the following wines: Nederburg Private Bin R163 Cabernet Sauvignon 2003, Nederburg Private Bin R121 Shiraz 2011, Nederburg Private Bin R181 Merlot 2009 and Nederburg Private Bin Eminence 2012.
