Stay in History
Spend the night where time stands still in provincial monuments and manor houses that have been lovingly restored.
Tulbagh Hotel – stay in one of South Africa’s oldest hotels. The Tulbagh Hotel’s story is intertwined with that of the town itself, with the main building dating back to 1859.
Wittedrift Manor – an elegant Cape Dutch manor near Church Street.
Cape Dutch Quarters Tulbagh – a portfolio of beautifully preserved heritage properties offering B&B and self-catering stays in the heart of the old village.
→ 25–43 Church Street – stay in one of Tulbagh’s beautifully restored self-catering heritage houses, each a provincial monument brought back to life after the 1969 earthquake.
⬇️ What to Do
No visit is complete without exploring Tulbagh’s museums and landmarks.
Start at the top of Church Street and walk your way through centuries of stories:
Oude Kerk Volksmuseum – the heart of Tulbagh’s founding story.
→ Earthquake Museum – relive 1969 and the town’s remarkable restoration.
Christo Coetzee Art Museum at The Victorian – a celebration of South African creativity.
→ The Pioneer House Museum – everyday life in the 1800s.
→ Church Street itself – the highest concentration of provincial heritage sites in South Africa.
Oudekloof Wine Estate – take a tractor ride or hike to the foot of the historic Roodezand Pass, once used by VOC travellers and known as the valley’s old frontier. A signal cannon, used to alert farmers of incoming ships for trade, still resides atop the mountain.
Tulbagh’s story has been centuries in the making and the next chapter could be yours.
