WELLINGTON WINE WEDNESDAY FIND A NEW HOME

The wildly popular Wine Wednesday has found a new home and will move to Au d’Hex Estate in March. Wine lovers should note that the March event has moved to Thursday 19 March 2020 to accommodate the Absa Cape Epic.  Stages four to six will be hosted in Wellington and the race village is located adjacent to Au d’Hex Estate.

All participants, support crews, spectators and fans of the Cape Epic are invited to join in the wine fun and discover award-winning Wellington wines.  Tickets are available from Quicket at R50 per person.

Wine Wednesday was initiated just over a year ago to showcase a collection of carefully-sourced local Wellington wines and give guests the opportunity to sample the wines and engage with the people behind each brand.  March will see the 13th edition of Wine Wednesday and the event has grown from a small group to more than 150 guests from Wellington and surrounding towns.

Wine Wednesday was started by the Old Mutual Insure Wellington Wine Route as a fundraising initiative for the Breytenbach Centre, the cultural hub of Wellington, where poetry, music, theatre, art exhibitions, book readings and author appearances happen each month.  The R50 entry fee was used to cover the basic costs of each event and the rest of the proceeds were donated to the centre.  After the first year, a total of R17 000 was donated to the centre. According to Francois Lotter, manager of the centre, these funds will be used to support a much-needed reading project in the local community.

The Wellington Wine Route will remain involved with the centre during 2020, supporting the annual poetry festival and regular book club meetings.  The move to the historical Au d’Hex Estate just outside Wellington was necessitated by the continued growth of the event.  The events venue and restaurant will be able to accommodate more people and allow the event to expand even more during the next year.  The local SPCA has been earmarked as the beneficiary for this year’s fundraising drive.
