In a magnificent display of excellence Wellington Wines’ winemakers have done them proud, achieving three trophies at the 2020 SA Young Wine Show presented by the SA National Wine Show Association (SANWSA) in collaboration with Agri-Expo.

In a unique situation Wellington Wines share the prestigious Pietman Hugo Trophy with Robertson Winery. The trophy is awarded to the winery scoring the highest total points for its best five wines and since they finished head to head, the winery proudly shares the award.

In addition, they have achieved the Burgoyne Trophy for SA Champion Shiraz and the Dr AI Perold Trophy for SA Champion Pinotage and considering the competition attracted 900 entries from 75 wineries, their hearts are filled with pride!

Winemaker Francois van Niekerk says he is humbled by the trophies and praises his teams’ hard work.

“Wine is certainly not made in isolation! It literally takes an entire village and plenty of passion, kindness, dedication, and a sense of humour. Collective knowledge is paramount with some of our grape farmers and their harvest teams third generation suppliers of exceptional quality grapes.  In our cellar we encourage innovation and creativity and the energy of our young winemaking team is testament to the wines we produce here. It’s hard work and sometimes enormously challenging but when you love what you do, tasting that final wine especially when it’s adorned with a few medals, is all the more rewarding!”
