Despite the recent fires that broke out in the Franschhoek Wine Valley mountains we’re pleased to announce that it’s business as usual and the region is still looking as beautiful as ever. During this time, it was remarkable to observe how the Franschhoek Community came together in an hour of need to support the farmers, volunteers and especially the local firefighters. As a result of the courageous efforts of all involved and the support from all our visitors during this time Franschhoek is ready to welcome visitors back for an unforgettable Franschhoek experience.

With a slight chill in the air in the mornings it is a gentle reminder to us that Summer is drawing to a close and Autumn is dusting off her coat to make a brief appearance before Winter sets in. With the seasons changing what better excuse to linger longer in Franschhoek and make the most of the last few warmer days. School holidays are also around the corner (and not forgetting the long weekends lying ahead), now would be the perfect time to plan your next trip to Franschhoek. When planning your itinerary be sure to allow for a few days in the valley and explore Franschhoek’s fine offerings.

The Babylonstoren Farm Hotel is the perfect holiday getaway destination for the whole family as the kids will be kept entertained for hours with the farm and garden experience. Young hotel guests can help to harvest fruit and vegetables from their garden, collect eggs for breakfast or help their bakers to knead and bake their delicious farm bread. Explore the area by bicycle or help feed the resident farm donkeys who love nothing better than a snack of bread (or two).

Young ones can feed the fish in their ponds, explore the spekbos labyrinth or see how insects make their homes in the rubble, wood or bark provided for them. A mere sampling of the plethora of family friendly activities available.

Another staycation suggestion is The Tree House at Boschendal, which is a brand new concept based on fun and relaxation for the whole family. An exciting edu-play centre which offers kids aged 4 – 14yrs a chance to enjoy an authentic farm experience under the guidance of the qualified Tree House team whilst parents can unwind and take a well-deserved break.

Something sweet is always a treat. The world-famous Huguenot Fine Chocolates is pure chocolate heaven and a delight for young and old! Indulge in a chocolate tour with the highlight being a chocolate making demo and tasting.

A little further up the main road and you’ll discover yet another chocolate haven – De Villiers Chocolate. Sample their range of decadent artisanal chocolates or homemade ice-cream. Yum!

For the ultimate in farm experiences a visit to the Farm Sanctuary SA is guaranteed to be a hit with the kids. At the sanctuary visitors have the opportunity to meet and interact with a range of cute (and cuddly) farm animals.

The hop-on hop-off Franschhoek Wine Tram will keep the little ones enthralled as you discover the true essence of the valley. Vineyards, scenery, warm hospitality, delicious cuisine and superb wines. Included in their stops is Grande Provence where the kids can enjoy a red and white grape juice ‘tasting’.

The last days of Summer makes for perfect picnic weather. Noble Hill’s Latin-inspired picnics adds its own twist to a favourite pastime. Leopard’s Leap Family Vineyards’ rotisserie lunches offer the perfect alternative to a picnic experience and is suited to young and old. Other popular picnic stops include Holden Manz and Mont Rochelle – both boasting exquisite views of the valley.

This is just a taster of what you can expect when visiting the valley. With the seasons also in the process of changing what better excuse to linger longer in Franschhoek and make the most of the last few warmer days. For more information visit www.franschhoek.org.za.
