Who are we?
- Passion! This, says Jacques Smit, is his contribution to the wine he makes. The rest he leaves to nature. But he does keep a watchful eye on proceedings! Jacques knows as much of what’s going on in the vineyards as in the cellar. He not only owns and runs one of Wellington’s most prominent vine nurseries, Jacques’ Constantia Vine Nursery, he also studied viticulture and oenology at the University of Stellenbosch. Jacques inherited the farm and vine nursery, but started making wine on the farm in 2003. He currently produces six wines made in open cement fermentation tanks where the skins are still pushed through by hand. No finings are added, sulphur levels are kept as low as possible and all wines are unfiltered. Small oak barrels are used for maturation. In the vineyard, Jacques believes in working with the elements.
