Enjoy a spectacular summer and book a picnic in Paarl – the perfect way to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the winelands paired with great food and wine.

Pick the spot for your perfect picnic on a wine farm amongst the vineyards, on sprawling lawns, under glorious trees, in a nature reserve or next to a national monument.  Picnic fair includes delicious treats, some special kiddies’ picnic baskets and even some traditional South African braai (barbecue) delicacies and kosher options.

Bertus Basson at Spice Route

A mere 45-minute drive from the city, Spice Route Destination’s delightful village set-up in Paarl makes for the perfect day-trip for the whole family. The destination’s fine array of culinary adventures includes Bertus Basson’s restaurant, aptly named Bertus Basson at Spice Route, which offers traditional South African fare, including popular picnic accompaniments such as local Fairview cheeses, fresh breads and artisanal meats. Their traditional inspired menu is also available from the restaurant, which includes dishes such as beef nachos, bobotie, yellow rice and raisins with sambals, boerrie rolls and milktart milkshake.
All of this can be enjoyed outside under the oak trees, in view of the lush meadows that spread out like a carpet across the picturesque Paarl winelands.

Eat @ Simonsvlei situated at Simonsvlei Winery has a big lawn area with tables under thatch umbrellas or the big oak trees. This is the ideal place for families with young children with its secured kids play area. Picnic basket bookings can be made 24 hours in advance.

Landskroon Wine Estate

Landskroon, situated along the south western slopes of Paarl Mountain, offers a breath taking view of their vineyards and Table Mountain in the distance. This picturesque wine farm comprises more than 300 hectares and is managed as a private, family operation and owned by the families of brothers Paul and Hugo de Villiers. Landskroon allows you to bring your own picnic basket and enjoy all the splendours they have to offer.

Le Bonheur Reptiles and Adventures

Le Bonheur Reptiles and Adventures provides a great day out for the whole family and they have great picnic baskets to seal the deal.

A free fishing benefit is to be enjoyed per picnic basket ordered. Rods for catch and release bass fishing are supplied. The beautiful waterfront garden feature many safe play areas for children.

Mellasat Vineyards

Home to the White Pinotage, Mellasat Vineyards enjoys a spectacular position under the dramatic Klein Drakenstein Mountains together with panoramic views of Paarl and its famous granite domes.  You can book a picnics or cheese platters with them.

Picnic in a Nature Reserve

Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve has a number of picnic spots near caves, waterfalls and reservoirs, which makes it the ideal place for a day surrounded by Mother Nature.

Situated in the Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve, the Millwater Wild Flower Garden spans eight hectares. Established in the mid-1930s it includes a bubbling river and several shallow ponds, plenty of trees for shade, picnic and braai spots and a magnificent selection of fynbos, including 15 species of protea and beautiful silver trees. The surrounding reserve includes several hiking and mountain-biking trails. Entrance to the gardens is free. To continue to the part of the reserve that includes Paarl Rock you’ll be charged a fee.

Nederburg

The Red Table Restaurant at Nederburg not only offers a beautiful setting for a picnic, but also offers various outdoor activities. Their lawns stretch out to views of the surrounding mountains and vineyards that yield their award winning wines. You’ll find leisurely spots complete with skittles and swings, croquet and giant Jenga, as well as tasting nooks for the curious at heart. Their picnic baskets is filled with delicious food and it also comes with a complimentary glass of sparkling wine, a bottle of mineral water and tea or coffee.

Volksmond Restaurant at the Afrikaans Language Monument.

There are few places in Paarl where you get such a beautiful view of Table Mountain. The Volksmond is a popular tourist picnic spot due to its location at The Taalmonument. The basic basket includes ciabatta rolls; a cheese platter with biscuits; sweet chilli sauce; cold meat; chicken mayonnaise; a Greek salad; fruit salad; something sweet and bottled water or fruit juice. You can add more items such as mini quiches, cold meats and savoury snacks. You can either make yourself comfortable at one of the tables next to the restaurant or take your picnic up to the monument and stretch out on the grass. The Taalmonument also hosts a variety of musical and theatre events during summer where you can bring your own picnic basket or pre-order one from the Volksmond Restaurant.
