The Afrikaans Language Museum and Monument offers the most spectacular views of Paarl and its picture-perfect landscapes. Their December calendar allows visitors to experience the splendour of this architectural masterpiece under the star-lit African skies and a magnificent full moon.
Full-moon Picnic with Father Christmas at the Taalmonument

The end of the year may still be far off, but children who can no longer hold out to meet Father Christmas or Santa Claus can experience an early Christmas, during the Father Christmas Full Moon picnic. These picnics are very popular with local residents and overseas visitors, who especially enjoy the sunsets and incredible night scenes. A free guided tour of the monument is also available at 18:30. Father Christmas should make his appearance by 19:00, therefore parents should bring their children’s clearly marked gifts to the Visitor Centre beforehand to be included in his bag. Bring along a torch and warm clothes. No dogs and fires are allowed. Safe parking is available and access is controlled.

Stargazing Picnic

During this picnic, visitors can explore the starry sky with the help of Orion Observation Group (OOG) members who share their knowledge and telescopes with visitors free of charge. Guests are welcome to bring their own picnic basket or pre-order one at Volksmond Coffee Shop (021 863 2800). Walking trails, outdoor games, playgrounds for children, outdoor gallery with poems, restaurant and free guided tour of the monument also available.

The Rockets Picnic Concert

This popular SAMA nominated R&b/pop group is an old favourite on many radio stations, and songs from their Afrikaans album, including ‘Namakwa Daisy’ and ‘Ek is Lief Vir Jou’, are great hits. It forms part of the Concert Series, loved by residents, foreigners and tourists, for the benefit of the ‘Let’s Read!’ children’s literacy project. Visitors are welcome to explore the scenic surroundings via the footpaths while the children entertain themselves in the playground. Bring your own drinks (no glass) and picnic basket or order one at Volksmond Coffee Shop on 021 863 2800. Delicious food and beverages on sale.
