Theme: The Future of the Valley

Submission deadline: midnight Monday 10 July 2017

The competition is open to all.

To enter the competition:

Only twelve submissions will be selected to participate in the competition. The 12 finalists will each be assigned a wall to paint their mural. This could be in Pniel Kylemore or Lanquedoch. There will be four finalist sites in each of the three towns.

The final twelve will compete for three prizes:

  • 1st prize R8500 cash
  • 2nd prize R4000 cash
  • 3rd prize R1500 cash

A Community Choice Award with a value of R1000 cash will also be awarded.

Your sketch needs to take into account the history and heritage of the Dwars River Valley, and the towns of Pniel, Kylemore and Lanquedoc. Sketches that will make the final 12 will be assessed on

  • how they tell or reference stories of the history and heritage of the valley
  • how they imagine the future of the valley visually
  • how the work contributes aesthetically to the valley and adds value to community members

Finalists will be chosen by a selection committee made up of members of the Dwars River Escape Route, the competition judges (all professional artists), and other stakeholders from the valley. The winning pieces will be selected by the same committee. The public will select the Community Choice Award via Facebook and Whatsapp.

On the two days of the competition, paints will be provided. A limited selection of paints will be issued per person. Entrants will need to work with the paint made available to them.

Lunch will be provided on both days, mineral water, transport between the competition hub in Pniel and the site an entrant is working.

The works will form part of a Dwars River Valley Street Art Tour that will be launched for the summer season of 2017 / 2018.

The Dwars River Valley Street Art Competition is a project of the Dwars River Escape Route, an association of tourism and related businesses and individuals from the four towns in the Dwars River Valley. It forms a part of our Vision 2020 strategy for opening up tourism opportunities in the valley.

The Competition is made possible by Open Africa, with the support of the Dwars Rivier Tourism Office.
