The talented winemaking team at Nederburg in Paarl has come out in full force to support the “ForQhubeka” fundraising drive, planned to raise awareness and funds during the upcoming 2018 Tour de France.

Nederburg is the premium wine partner of Africa’s pro-cycling squad, Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka.  The winery is also home to Qhubeka’s bicycle assembly facility in the Western Cape. Together these entities help make a significant difference in the lives of South Africans through the distribution of bicycles within vulnerable communities.

“It’s so encouraging to be working for a global brand like Nederburg that supports Qhubeka, a charity that advances socio-economic upliftment,” says Andrea Freeborough, Nederburg’s cellar-master.

“The charity does so not as a hand-out but rather a hand-up via the distribution of bicycles, to help community initiatives make a bigger impact in their respective areas of expertise, from tourism, the environment and waste management, to community safety, healthcare, education and so much more,” she explains.

She was joined at the celebration by red wine-maker, Samuel Viljoen, white wine-maker, Elmarie Botes and recently appointed assistant white-wine maker, Jamie Fredericks.  They raised a glass to the cause, the upcoming Tour de France and Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka. They also toasted recent bicycle distribution ceremonies via strategic partners and programmes across the Western Cape, including Kylemore, Gugulethu, Khayelitsha and Paarl.

Anyone can participate in Qhubeka’s “ForQhubeka” fundraising events campaign. To make it accessible to all individuals, the organisation has come up with five unique fundraising categories, each offering a range of tools to support the chosen fundraising activity.  The categories are: Party ForQhubeka, Climb ForQhubeka, Movie ForQhubeka, Play ForQhubeka and Sweat ForQhubeka.  To get involved and register a fundraising ForQhubeka initiative, go to https://www.givengain.com/cc/forQhubeka/.

Robyn Bradshaw elaborates: “Watch this space, as there’s more to come as we prepare to support the formidable Team Dimension Data cycling team as they traverse the flats, hills and mountain stages of the 2018 Tour de France. It will demand the highest skill, the most extraordinary discipline and the unyielding will to succeed – the same tools our winemakers require to produce world-class wines of distinction. We know the riders have all those ingredients and more, and we call on you to join us in supporting this special team. It’s a massive opportunity and it deserves everyone’s backing.”

Known as the world’s most iconic road cycling race, the 2018 Tour de France, the 105th edition, is made up of 21 stages and will cover a total distance of 3 351 kilometers. It runs from 7 to 29 July.
