Drakenstein Municipality and Paarl Wine and Tourism are celebrating unity in diversity on the streets of this historic Boland town with a unique collaboration that forms part of the Tourism Reboot campaign for the region. On Wednesday, 23 September, Tannie Poppie kom Paarl toe! will feature a cast of heritage chefs and local entrepreneurs joining forces to showcase traditional South African delicacies and to pay tribute to the diversity that lies at the heart of South Africa’s proud heritage.

Roosterkoek queen tannie Poppie van As comes from the Karoo town of Laingsburg and has become a national treasure for her lovable personality and delicious roosterkoek, a local delicacy made of dough roasted on an open fire. Tannie Poppie started her roadside roosterkoek stand to earn an income and won the hearts of passersby. It was not long before she became famous as she appeared on lifestyle TV shows, in magazine articles and even a documentary. Her supporters even included a group of Italian cyclists, who ended up inviting her on an Italian adventure. Tannie Poppie will be making her trademark roosterkoek with a variety of fillings, including cheese and biltong, boerewors (sausage) and smoor, cheese and jam or plain with real farm butter. Roosterkoek priced from R15 – R45.

Tannie Poppie will be joined by renowned home chef Mynhardt Joubert, who became a household name when he won the Kyknet reality cooking competition Kokkedoor. This led to his own restaurant Stasiestraat, a cook book and TV series. He was also appointed brand ambassador for KWV. Mynhardt will be serving his mouthwatering melktert (R25), another South African favourite, but with an innovative rooibos twist.

And of course, no heritage celebration will be complete without something off the braai (barbeque). The Braai Café was started by a group of young entrepreneurs from the Mbekweni community and features a mouthwatering shisa nyama menu. They operate from the Whamkilekle business hive in Mbekweni. They are adding their sticky shisanyama chicken wing sosaties (kebabs) served with homemade chakanaise and pickled cabbage (R20) to the menu.

To finish off Ons KanJa Coffee will be serving street-style hot and cold coffee options. This new business venture is a partnership between Ricardo Dino Hugo and Chrissy and Manny de Canha. They deliver coffee to businesses and also have a street stand in Wellington.
The menu offers four meal combos varying in price from R65 – R100. Visit our Facebook event page https://www.facebook.com/events/770341213699524 to pre-order and pay for your meal combo.
Only 200 tickets will be available. Limited stock of individual menu items will also be available on the day for the public to purchase. Pop down to 24 Stasiestreet from 10:30 till 14:00 to collect your order.

Paarl Wine and Tourism strives to support local business and talent. This pop-up food experience will be broadcasted live to the community via local community radio station Radio KC. Busker Craig Stott, another well-known face on the streets of Paarl, will keep the vibe going with live music as well.

A big thank you to Foundation Stones who will be accommodating tannie Poppie during her stay in Paarl.
