Congratulations Waverley Hills on making history this week with releasing the first Marselan wine in South Africa Such brilliant news!!
Here's the story behind this special wine... About 12 years ago the winemaker from Waverley Hills, Johan Delport, read an article about Marselan, a French cultivar mainly grown in Southern France. Marselan is a cross between Grenache Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon and was cultivated in the early 1960’s by Paul Truel near the French town of Marseillan. Johan contacted Vititec, the grape vine nursery in Paarl, to import the first plant from France in 2010. Vititec then started with the mandatory quarantine and multiplication of the cultivar, which took several years. In 2015 Waverley Hills managed to get the first 80 experimental vines from the nursery to plant on the farm and following year received a further 1200 vines to establish the first commercial Marselan vineyard in South Africa. In 2020 Johan was able to make the first wine from this vineyard and after 15 months of barrel ageing the wine was prepared and bottled earlier this year.
.
Finally now after 12 years, the Waverley Hills Marselan 2020 has been released and can be enjoyed
