THE SWEET STORY OF 'MELKTERT'

Milktart is deeply rooted in South Africa’s history, particularly in the Afrikaner community. The creamy, custardy deliciousness of our beloved 'melktert' - with a hint of cinnamon - traces its roots back to the Dutch settlers who arrived in the Cape in the 17th century.
Over time, the recipe has been adapted and the flavour profile tweaked for us to own this as a truly 'rainbow nation' icon.
Symbolising comfort, tradition and a shared heritage, 'melktert' has became a staple at gatherings, celebrations, and tea times, transcending cultural boundaries to become a unifying South African treat.
Thanks to Jamie Oliver - who took our traditional 'melktert' to the next level by pouring golden caramel over the top - our humble tart has gained celebratory status!
But at its heart, the ritual of serving milk tart is synonymous with South African hospitality, and sharing a slice of 'melktert' is often seen as a gesture of warmth and care.
Every week, the FOMM continue this 'tea-time tradition' at our Friday Milktart Mornings. Everyone is invited. You can just arrive. Tea, coffee, and homemade 'melktert' (for just R35) are available from 09h30-11h30 on the shady porch of Joubert House, overlooking the indigenous herb garden.

Feathers & Flatcaps' Pink Perlé Platter Special
Ladies, grab your besties and dive into a platter that’s as fabulous as you are! Think locally sourced trout pâté, beef carpaccio, thyme-drizzled brie, homemade pot bread, pear chutney, and even a berry-infused salted peanut brittle chocolate truffle (because why not?).
Oh, and did we mention the bottle of Montagu Winery ’s Lady Mary Montagu Perlé Pink Moscato? With its notes of strawberries, peach blossoms, and a touch of Turkish delight, it’s basically summer in a bottle.
Available while stock lasts—don’t miss this sip-worthy, share-worthy treat!
